Sowerby is an attractive Georgian village, with Conservation Area status, on the outskirts of the North Yorkshire town of Thirsk.

The Pines, Blakey Lane is a small new-build housing development on a brown field plot on the fringe of the village limits and the practice was commissioned initially by the owner of the site. The design – a mixed development of 12 terraced and detached dwellings – necessitated close dialogue with the planning authority. The focus was to achieve a street scene to Blakey Lane that would respect the close knit urban character of Sowerby and avoid the looser surburban character that often results in these situations.

Planning permission was won against the backdrop of a number of planning issues and strong local opposition. This entailed protracted negotiations and a succession of refinements but our designs were well received by the planning authority as being both sensitive to the local vernacular and an appropriate response to the site.

The site was subsequently acquired by local developer Quicksilver Homes who then commissioned Lloyd Evans Prichard to produce a construction drawing package on a design and build basis. The development is nearing completion and many units are now occupied.
