The Ashes is a 17th century timber box framed house. The frame had weathered and rotted badly and infill panels of brickwork and cementitious render had deteriorated.

The brief was to repair the frame splicing in new oak only where necessary, replacing cementitious render with soft lime render and repointing the brick panels with lime mortar.

The interior of the house was altered forming a kitchen and bathroom. All other rooms were carefully repaired in materials which would allow the fabric to breathe. In so doing the dampness which affected the house has been removed.
