Lawton Hall is an 18th century Grade II listed country house set within its own substantial grounds in rural south Cheshire. In common with many stately homes Lawton Hall's fortunes declined in the latter part of the 20th Century. It's last use – as a school – ceased in the late 1980's.
The buildings, including a large stable block courtyard, had fallen into disrepair over many years culminating in a series of fires in the mid 1990s which reduced them to ruins. It was then acquired by Gleeson Homes in 2001 with permission for an enabling works scheme for 20 new build Queen Anne style luxury homes on the site of the former walled garden tied to a commitment to the faithful restoration of the Hall and Stables. The later element allowed their conversion to 14 houses and apartments of varying sizes.
The appointment of LEP as architects for the development reflected our experience both in conservation and the residential sector. The concept designs had already been produced by another architectural practice prior to our involvement. Consequently the focus of our role was to refine and develop these designs and to ensure that the original intentions were not diluted or compromised by the tensions which inevitably arise between conservation and commercial housing construction.
